Edward A. Nierengarten (1912-2005)

Edward A. NierengartenEDWARD A. NIERENGARTEN was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota on September 29, 1912. In 1938 he married Catherine E. Winter and they had six children including Hugh, who joined the firm in 1977. Educated at St. John’s University and St. Paul College of Law, Ed received an LLB degree in 1940 andwas admitted to the Minnesota Bar in 1943, havingserved in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Ed was admitted to practice in all Minnesota Courts, the U.S. District Court, the Court of Military Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He also served for many years in the Minnesota National Guard, retiring with the rank of Captain in the Army Judge Advocate General Department.

In 1944 Ed and his family moved to New Ulm where he joined Albert Pfaender in the law firm of Pfaender & Nierengarten. He served from 1957 until 1972 as a part time Municipal Judge for the City of New Ulm and from 1972 until 1976 served as a Brown County Judicial Officer. From 1979 to 1980 he served as the New Ulm City Attorney, and thereafter served as an Assistant City Attorney until 1985. He practiced in partnership with his son, Hugh T. Nierengarten, daughter-in-law, Susan J. Nierengarten and partner, Roger H. Hippert until retiring in 1995.

Ed held memberships in the Brown County Bar Association, Ninth District Bar Association, Minnesota State Bar Association (where he was honored as a fifty year member), the American Bar Association, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the American Judicature Association.

Ed passed away on June 5, 2005 at the age of 92.
